Humanoids

A robot built to human proportions — torso, two arms, a head — so it can use the doors, tools and workbenches made for people.

  • humanoid robot
  • android
  • general-purpose humanoid

What it is

A humanoid has a torso, two arms and a head in roughly human proportion. The point of the shape is the environment: a machine with a person's reach and footprint can work in a kitchen or a factory without changing either. The trade is cost and complexity — more joints than any other body plan, shorter runtime, and software still catching up.

Also called an android or general-purpose humanoid. In this taxonomy the torso, two arms and head decide membership; how it moves decides the child.

The types

  • Bipedal humanoid — walks on two legs; goes anywhere a person goes, at the cost of balance, runtime and price; most humanoids take this form.
  • Wheeled-base humanoid — the same upper body on wheels or tracks; stable, long-running, heavier, flat floors only.
  • Fixed-base humanoid — torso, arms and head on a bench or cart; manipulation research without locomotion.

What to compare

Attribute Why it matters In this catalogue
height Decides which shelves, doors and workbenches it fits 1200 mm (Booster T1) – 1810 mm (Agility Robotics Digit)
dof_total More joints, more capability, more to break and program 20 (AGIBOT G1) – 55 (Fourier GR-3)
hands_included Many base models ship without hands none (5)
payload Per arm or both arms together; read the fine print 2 kg (AGIBOT A2) – 25 kg (1X Technologies NEO)
battery_runtime Walking drains far faster than standing or rolling 90 min (AGIBOT A2) – 480 min (Galbot G1)
sdk Research tiers expose joint control; consumer tiers often do not ros2 (3), other (1), python (1), proprietary (1)
max_speed Walking pace for most; a few are built to run 0.5 m/s (Booster T1) – 3.3 m/s (Unitree H1 / H1-2)

Edge cases

  • Two legs, no torso or arms: a biped under Legged robot.
  • Wheeled base with arms but no head or human proportion: mobile manipulator.
  • Four legs under a human torso: humanoid by the torso rule, but no humanoid child fits a leg count other than two, so it stays unclassified until a product exists.
  • Hands sold separately: a Hand component; see hands_included.

Rule of membership

Torso plus two arms plus a head in human proportion. Locomotion decides the child category.
